Primary Muscles

A compound rowing exercise that develops back width and thickness by pulling cable resistance toward the lower torso.

Instructions

  1. Set the cable pulley to a low position and attach a straight bar or handle attachment.
  2. Stand facing the cable machine with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
  3. Grasp the handle with both hands, arms extended, and lean back slightly from the hips.
  4. Pull the handle toward your lower torso, bringing your elbows back and in.
  5. Squeeze your back muscles at the end of the range, pausing briefly.
  6. Return to the starting position in a controlled manner while maintaining tension.

Tips

  • Initiate the pull with your elbows and mid-back muscles rather than just your arms.
  • Maintain a neutral spine and avoid excessive rounding of the back.
  • Keep your chest up and shoulders back throughout the movement.
  • Control the eccentric portion to maximize muscle engagement and time under tension.
  • Use a weight that allows full range of motion without compromising form.
  • The lower angle emphasizes lats and middle-back muscles effectively.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
