Primary Muscles

A classic pulling exercise performed with kettlebells, engaging the back muscles and developing horizontal pulling strength.

Instructions

  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding kettlebells in each hand at your sides.
  2. Hinge at the hips, keeping your back straight and knees slightly bent.
  3. Lower the kettlebells toward the ground while maintaining a neutral spine.
  4. Drive your elbows upward and back, pulling the kettlebells toward your hips.
  5. Squeeze your back muscles at the top of the movement.
  6. Lower the kettlebells in a controlled manner back to the starting position.

Tips

  • Initiate the pull by driving your elbows, not by pulling with your arms.
  • Keep the kettlebells close to your body throughout the movement.
  • Maintain a neutral spine and avoid excessive rounding of your lower back.
  • Squeeze your back muscles and retract your shoulder blades at the top.
  • Breathe in during the hinge and out as you pull the kettlebells up.
  • Use a weight that allows you to maintain proper form throughout all reps.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
