Primary Muscles

A T-bar rowing variation using resistance bands that effectively targets the entire back musculature. Provides excellent resistance progression for building strength and muscle density.

Instructions

  1. Set up a T-bar row apparatus or place a barbell in a corner with one end elevated.
  2. Secure resistance band(s) under the raised end of the barbell or looped appropriately.
  3. Straddle the bar and position yourself in a stable, athletic stance with a slight forward lean.
  4. Grip the handles or bar with both hands at chest height, maintaining good posture.
  5. Pull the bar towards your chest by driving your elbows back and up.
  6. Squeeze your back muscles firmly at the top of the movement.
  7. Lower the bar back to the starting position with controlled movement.
  8. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Maintain a neutral spine throughout the movement to protect your lower back.
  • Keep your chest up and avoid rounding your shoulders forward.
  • The T-bar angle reduces stress on the lower back compared to bent-over rows.
  • Focus on retracting your scapula to maximize back muscle engagement.
  • Use a hip hinge pattern rather than just pulling with your arms.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
