Instructions

  1. Anchor the suspension straps securely above waist height, with the anchor point in front of you.
  2. Face the anchor point and grip both handles with your arms extended, palms facing each other.
  3. Walk your feet forward and lean back at an angle, so your body weight loads your back; your heels should remain on the ground and your body should form a straight line.
  4. Keep your core engaged and chest up; this is the starting position.
  5. Initiate the movement by bending your elbows and driving them down and back.
  6. Pull your chest toward the handles by retracting your shoulder blades and engaging your lats.
  7. Pull until your chest nearly touches the handles, holding briefly at the top.
  8. Lower yourself back to the starting position with control.
  9. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Adjust difficulty by changing body angle: a more upright position is easier, while a more horizontal position is harder.
  • Keep your body in a straight line from heels to head throughout; avoid sagging hips or piking your hips up.
  • Focus on pulling with your back and driving your elbows down; minimize arm involvement.
  • Maintain steady breathing, exhaling as you pull and inhaling as you lower.
  • This variation is highly effective for training in small spaces and provides excellent back activation with reduced stress on joints.
  • The suspension straps allow for a greater range of motion compared to a barbell inverted row.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
