Standing Concentration CurlStanding Concentration Curl

An intense biceps isolation exercise performed standing with a single dumbbell, emphasizing peak contraction and mind-muscle connection through concentrated effort on one arm at a time.

Instructions

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in your working hand. Lean forward slightly at the hips, allowing your working arm to hang perpendicular to the ground with your elbow pointing outward.
  2. Position your non-working hand on your opposite leg for support or rest it on your hip for balance.
  3. Keep your upper arm completely stationary throughout the movement. Flex your elbow to curl the dumbbell upward, focusing on contracting your biceps.
  4. Continue curling until your biceps are fully contracted and the dumbbell reaches shoulder level.
  5. Pause at the top for a full second while flexing and squeezing the biceps hard.
  6. Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position, maintaining tension in the biceps throughout.
  7. Complete all repetitions on one arm before switching to the other side.

Tips

  • Keep your upper arm completely fixed—all movement should occur at the elbow joint only.
  • The 45-degree forward lean helps isolate the biceps by preventing body English and momentum.
  • Perform reps with a slow, controlled tempo to maximize time under tension.
  • Really focus on the squeeze at the top—this is where the peak contraction occurs.
  • Use a weight that allows you to maintain perfect form; the emphasis is on the quality of the contraction, not the load.
  • This exercise is excellent for building the biceps peak and improving mind-muscle connection.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
