Primary Muscles

A lat pulldown variation where you lean back significantly while pulling the bar toward your chest for increased lat recruitment.

Instructions

  1. Sit at a lat pulldown machine and grip the bar with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  2. Position your feet flat on the floor or foot platform to ensure stability.
  3. Lean back approximately 20-30 degrees from the vertical, creating an angle at your torso.
  4. Engage your core and maintain this backward lean throughout the movement.
  5. Pull the bar down toward your chest while maintaining your reclined position.
  6. Focus on driving your elbows down and back, not just pulling the bar down.
  7. Bring the bar to your upper chest, pausing briefly.
  8. Control the bar back to the starting position without allowing the weight to drift forward.
  9. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • The backward lean increases lat involvement and reduces arm involvement.
  • Maintain your reclined position throughout; don’t adjust your lean during reps.
  • Pull the bar toward the sternum rather than straight down.
  • Keep your chest up and shoulders back to maximize lat engagement.
  • Move deliberately without jerking or using momentum.
  • Use this variation if you find standard lat pulldowns put too much emphasis on arm muscles.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
