Primary Muscles

A beginner-friendly compound back exercise using a close grip on a lat pulldown machine, emphasizing lat development with reduced bicep involvement.

Instructions

  1. Sit down on the lat pulldown machine and select your desired weight.
  2. Position yourself under the bar with your thighs under the thigh pads for stability.
  3. Grab the bar with a close grip (hands closer together than shoulder-width), palms facing downward or toward each other.
  4. Your arms should be extended upward with a slight bend in your elbows; this is your starting position.
  5. As you exhale, pull the bar down toward your upper chest by driving your elbows downward and backward.
  6. Focus on retracting your shoulder blades and engaging your lats throughout the movement.
  7. Continue the pull until the bar reaches approximately upper chest height or slightly below chin level.
  8. Squeeze your lat muscles hard at the bottom of the movement and hold the contraction for a second.
  9. As you inhale, slowly extend your arms back upward in a controlled manner.
  10. Return to the starting position with arms nearly extended but not fully locked out.
  11. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Tips

  • The close grip reduces bicep involvement compared to wider grips, allowing better lat isolation and development.
  • Keep your torso relatively upright throughout; avoid excessive leaning backward, which can reduce lat engagement.
  • Drive your elbows downward and backward; think about initiating the pull from your elbows, not your hands.
  • Move deliberately and with full control; avoid jerking the bar, which reduces lat engagement and increases injury risk.
  • Lower the weight with control on the eccentric phase; the returning phase is crucial for lat muscle development.
  • This machine variation is excellent for beginners learning lat pulldown technique before progressing to wider grip variations.
