Wide-Grip Pulldown Behind The NeckWide-Grip Pulldown Behind The Neck

A lat pulldown variation where the bar is pulled behind the neck to emphasize upper back development and improve shoulder mobility.

Instructions

  1. Sit down on a lat pulldown machine and adjust the knee pad to fit your height properly.
  2. Grasp the wide bar with a pronated grip (palms forward), positioning your hands wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. Bring your torso and head forward slightly, imagining an imaginary line from the center of the bar down to the back of your neck.
  4. Exhale as you bring the bar down until it touches the back of your neck by drawing your shoulders and upper arms down and back.
  5. Concentrate on squeezing your back muscles at the fully contracted position.
  6. Keep your upper torso stationary—only your arms should move and your forearms should only hold the bar.
  7. Inhale as you slowly raise the bar back to the starting position when your arms are fully extended and lats are fully stretched.
  8. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • This variation places greater emphasis on the posterior deltoids and upper back than front pulldowns.
  • Move the bar in a controlled manner without jerking or using momentum.
  • Lean your head forward slightly to provide clearance for the bar.
  • Avoid excessive forward lean of your torso to protect your lower back.
  • If you have shoulder mobility issues, the front pulldown may be more appropriate.
  • Use lighter weight on this variation compared to standard front pulldowns.
