A plate-loaded machine lat pulldown variant where the handles travel in a straight vertical path, pulling overhead grips down to shoulder level to target the latissimus dorsi.
Instructions
- Sit at the vertical traction machine and adjust the seat height so the handles are directly overhead when your arms are fully extended.
- Secure your thighs under the pad (if present) and plant your feet flat on the floor.
- Grasp the handles with a wide overhand grip, palms facing forward.
- Keeping your chest up and core braced, pull the handles straight down toward your shoulders in a controlled arc.
- Squeeze your lats at the bottom of the movement when the handles reach shoulder level.
- Pause briefly, then slowly extend your arms back to the starting position, letting the lats stretch fully at the top.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Unlike a cable pulldown, the handles on this machine travel a fixed vertical path — avoid trying to pull the handles toward your chest; let the machine guide the movement.
- Initiate the pull by depressing your shoulder blades before bending the elbows; this keeps the lats driving the movement rather than the biceps.
- Lean back only slightly — excessive layback shifts work away from the lats.
- Control the eccentric (upward) phase for maximum time under tension and to protect the shoulder joint.
- Keep wrists neutral; avoid bending them back or curling them under the handles.
- If the machine loads plates directly, use smaller increments — plate-loaded resistance increases quickly relative to cable stacks.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
