Wide-Grip Lat PulldownWide-Grip Lat Pulldown

A machine-based back-pulling exercise using a wide grip to develop lat strength and upper body muscle, ideal for beginners.

Instructions

  1. Sit down on a lat pulldown machine and adjust the knee pad to fit your height, ensuring it prevents your body from being lifted by the weight.
  2. Reach up and grasp the wide bar with palms facing forward, hands positioned wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. Bring your torso back approximately 30 degrees while creating a curvature in your lower back and sticking your chest out. This is your starting position.
  4. Exhale as you bring the bar down until it touches your upper chest by drawing your shoulders and upper arms down and back.
  5. Concentrate on squeezing your back muscles at the fully contracted position.
  6. Keep your upper torso stationary—only your arms should move; forearms do no work except holding the bar.
  7. Inhale and slowly raise the bar back to the starting position when your arms are fully extended and your lats are fully stretched.
  8. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Avoid pulling the bar down using your forearms—engage your back muscles instead.
  • The wider grip naturally emphasizes lat development more than narrower grips.
  • Control the weight throughout the entire range of motion—no jerking or momentum.
  • Lean back slightly more as you pull to maximize back muscle engagement.
  • Maintain a tight grip on the bar without using excessive grip pressure.
  • Increase weight progressively as your strength improves while maintaining proper form.
