A machine-based shoulder press using leverage mechanics where the lifter presses handles upward to target the deltoids and triceps.
Instructions
- Load an appropriate weight onto the machine pins.
- Adjust the seat for your body height so the handles are near the top of your shoulders at the beginning of the movement.
- Sit back firmly in the seat with your chest up and shoulders back.
- Grasp the handles with a pronated (palms-forward) grip at approximately shoulder width or slightly wider.
- Ensure your core is engaged and your back is against the seat pad.
- Press the handles upward by extending through your elbows and driving with your shoulders and triceps.
- Fully extend your arms at the top without locking out your elbows completely.
- Pause briefly at the top position, then return the weight in a controlled manner just above the starting position.
- For multiple repetitions, avoid completely returning to the stops to maintain tension on the muscles.
Tips
- Adjust seat height so handles are at shoulder level when arms are at rest
- Keep your chest up and avoid leaning back excessively during the press
- Press in a straight vertical line rather than pressing forward
- Maintain constant tension by not fully returning to the stops
- The pronated grip emphasizes the deltoids more than other grip variations
- Control the lowering (negative) portion of the movement for maximum benefit
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
