Overhead Press (Barbell)
A fundamental pressing exercise performed standing that emphasizes shoulder strength and development with significant core engagement and stability demands.
Instructions
- Position the barbell at approximately shoulder height in a squat rack.
- Stand with feet hip-width apart or slightly wider for stability.
- Grip the barbell with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width, elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees.
- Maintain an upright torso and engage your core.
- Press the barbell overhead by extending your arms vertically.
- Achieve full lockout at the top with arms fully extended.
- Lower the barbell back to shoulder height in a controlled manner.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Tips
- Keep your torso vertical and avoid excessive arch in your lower back.
- Press straight up rather than allowing the barbell to drift forward or back.
- Maintain tight core and glute engagement throughout the movement.
- This fundamental movement builds shoulder strength and requires minimal equipment.
- Start with a weight you can press for multiple reps with strict form.
- Gradually increase weight as your strength and shoulder stability improve.
