Shoulder Press - With Bands

A pressing movement performed with resistance bands that targets the shoulders and triceps through an overhead pressing pattern.
Instructions
- Stand on an exercise band so that tension begins at arm’s length, with feet shoulder-width apart.
- Grasp the handles and lift them so that the hands are at shoulder height, palms facing forward.
- Position your elbows bent with upper arms and forearms in line to the torso. This is your starting position.
- As you exhale, lift the handles up until your arms are fully extended overhead.
- Pause briefly at the top of the movement, feeling the contraction in the shoulders and triceps.
- Inhale as you lower the handles back to shoulder height with control.
- Maintain an upright posture throughout, avoiding excessive arching of the lower back.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Keep your core engaged to stabilize your body throughout the movement.
- Do not bounce or use momentum to drive the handles up; maintain controlled movement.
- Adjust the band resistance by standing farther from the center point or wrapping the band for more tension.
- Keep your head neutral and eyes forward, avoiding excessive neck extension.
- Breathe steadily throughout; exhale during the pressing phase and inhale during the lowering phase.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
