A seated pressing variation where the lifter sits on the floor with legs extended, pressing a barbell overhead to build shoulder strength with minimal leg drive.

Instructions

  1. Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you, back against a wall for support if needed.
  2. Position the barbell in the front rack position on your shoulders at collarbone height.
  3. Press the barbell vertically overhead, fully extending your arms at the top.
  4. Lock out the weight while maintaining neutral spine alignment.
  5. Lower the barbell with control back to shoulder height and repeat.

Tips

  • This variation eliminates leg drive, forcing the shoulders and core to work harder.
  • The Z Press is excellent for building strict pressing strength without momentum.
  • Maintain an upright posture and avoid arching your back excessively.
  • Use lighter weight than your standing press since you cannot utilize leg drive.
  • This exercise demands significant core stability and shoulder mobility.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
