A unilateral pressing exercise using kettlebells where you press one arm overhead at a time. Develops shoulder strength and core stability.
Instructions
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and two kettlebells at your shoulders.
- Clean the kettlebells to your shoulders by extending through your legs and hips while pulling them toward your shoulders. Rotate your wrists so the kettlebells rest on your forearms at shoulder height.
- Press the right kettlebell directly overhead by extending through the elbow, turning it so the palm faces forward.
- Keep the left kettlebell stationary at your shoulder while pressing with the right.
- Lower the right kettlebell back to shoulder height.
- Immediately press the left kettlebell overhead while keeping the right stationary.
- Lower the left kettlebell back to your shoulder. One rep equals one press on each side.
- Continue alternating sides for all repetitions.
Tips
- Maintain a tight core and stable stance throughout.
- The non-working arm helps stabilize your body; keep it engaged.
- Press in a straight vertical line, not forward.
- Keep your chest up and avoid excessive arching of your lower back.
- Breathe out as you press, breathe in as you lower.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
