Primary Muscles

A machine squat variation where the load attaches to a hip belt rather than the back or shoulders, allowing heavy quad-dominant squatting without spinal compression.

Instructions

  1. Load the belt squat machine and fasten the hip belt snugly around your waist, just above the hips.
  2. Step onto the platform and grasp the side handles for stability.
  3. Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart (or slightly wider) and toes turned out slightly.
  4. Disengage the safety mechanism so the weight is suspended from the belt.
  5. Brace your core, keep your chest tall, and push your hips back and down as you bend your knees.
  6. Descend until your thighs are parallel to the platform, or slightly below if mobility allows.
  7. Drive through your mid-foot to extend your legs and return to the starting position.
  8. Lock out the safety at the end of your set before stepping off the platform.

Tips

  • Because the load hangs below your hips instead of on your spine, this movement is ideal for trainees with lower-back sensitivity or those looking to accumulate high training volume without axial loading.
  • Keep your torso as upright as possible; the belt squat naturally encourages a more vertical shin-and-torso angle than a barbell back squat.
  • Foot position can be adjusted: a shoulder-width stance emphasizes the quads, while a wider sumo stance increases glute involvement.
  • Actively push your knees out in line with your toes throughout the movement — do not let them cave inward.
  • Use a slow, controlled descent (2–3 seconds) and avoid bouncing at the bottom.
  • The specific machine design (Pit Shark, pendulum-style, or plate-loaded belt-squat) will affect range of motion and feel; set handles and platform height to suit your limb length.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
