Primary Muscles
Front Barbell SquatFront Barbell Squat

A lower-body compound exercise where a barbell is held in front of the shoulders, and the lifter descends until thighs are below parallel before driving back up. This emphasizes quadriceps development.

Instructions

  1. Position the barbell in a squat rack at a height that allows you to step under it easily.
  2. Step under the bar and place it across your front shoulders and upper chest.
  3. Keep your elbows high and parallel to the floor; cross your arms to secure the bar or use a clean grip.
  4. Unrack the weight and step back into a shoulder-width stance with toes slightly turned out.
  5. Keep your head up, chest proud, and a slight arch in your lower back as your starting position.
  6. Inhale and simultaneously bend at the hips and knees, descending until your thighs are below parallel to the floor.
  7. Drive through your midfoot and heels to powerfully extend your hips and knees.
  8. Return to the starting position while maintaining an upright torso and core engagement.

Tips

  • Maintain an upright torso throughout the movement; excessive forward lean reduces quad development.
  • Keep your elbows high; dropping them will round your upper back and destabilize the load.
  • Ensure your knees track over your toes throughout the entire movement to prevent valgus collapse.
  • Achieving proper flexibility to hold the front rack position may require mobility work.
  • Descend with control to maximize muscle tension and allow proper power development on the ascent.
  • Take a deep breath at the top of each rep, create tension, and exhale partially through the descent.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
