Primary Muscles

An isolation exercise for the lateral deltoids using the Smith machine bar, performed by raising the bar out to the sides to shoulder height.

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith machine bar to waist height and load it with an appropriate weight.
  2. Stand facing the machine with feet shoulder-width apart, maintaining a neutral spine.
  3. Grip the bar with a wide grip, hands approximately 6-12 inches wider than shoulder-width.
  4. Keep a slight bend in your elbows and unlock the bar from the safety catches.
  5. Raise the bar out to your sides in a wide arc, lifting it upward toward shoulder height.
  6. Keep your arms slightly bent throughout the movement and maintain a controlled pace.
  7. Continue until the bar reaches approximately shoulder height or slightly above.
  8. Pause briefly at the top, feeling the contraction in your lateral shoulders.
  9. Slowly lower the bar back to the starting position with control.

Tips

  • Keep a consistent slight bend in your elbows throughout the entire movement.
  • Avoid using momentum or swinging the weight; move slowly and deliberately.
  • The wide grip naturally reduces the range of motion compared to dumbbells.
  • Keep your core tight and maintain an upright posture throughout.
  • Do not raise the bar above shoulder height to avoid excessive shoulder strain.
  • Focus on lateral deltoid engagement rather than relying on momentum.
  • Avoid shrugging your shoulders; the movement should come from the shoulder joint, not the traps.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
