Seated Side Lateral RaiseSeated Side Lateral Raise

An isolation exercise that targets the lateral deltoids by raising dumbbells to the sides while seated, with emphasis on shoulder width strength.

Instructions

  1. Pick a couple of dumbbells and sit at the end of a flat bench with your feet firmly on the floor.
  2. Hold the dumbbells with your palms facing in and your arms straight down at your sides at arms’ length. This will be your starting position.
  3. While maintaining the torso stationary (no swinging), lift the dumbbells to your side with a slight bend on the elbow and the hands slightly tilted forward as if pouring water in a glass.
  4. Continue to go up until your arms are parallel to the floor. Exhale as you execute this movement and pause for a second at the top.
  5. Lower the dumbbells back down slowly to the starting position as you inhale, maintaining tension throughout the movement.
  6. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your torso completely still throughout the movement; avoid any swinging or momentum.
  • Use lighter dumbbells than you might for other exercises; proper form is more important than heavy weight.
  • Perform 10-12 repetitions with controlled movement for optimal shoulder development.
  • The slight forward tilt of your hands (as if pouring water) helps maximize lateral deltoid activation.
  • Sitting position eliminates momentum and leg drive, making this a pure shoulder isolation exercise.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
