A rotational exercise using a barbell plate held like a steering wheel to develop shoulder rotator-cuff and core stability.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with your feet positioned about hip to shoulder-width apart.
  2. Hold a barbell plate in both hands at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions, as if gripping a steering wheel.
  3. Position the plate at approximately chest height with your arms extended straight out in front of you.
  4. Your palms should face each other, holding the plate firmly at the sides.
  5. Rotate the plate to one side as far as possible, using the same motion you would use to turn a steering wheel.
  6. Feel the tension in your shoulders and core as you rotate to full range of motion.
  7. Reverse the motion, rotating the plate all the way to the opposite side.
  8. Continue alternating sides for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your feet firmly planted and your core engaged throughout
  • Move through a full range of motion for maximum shoulder and core activation
  • Use controlled, deliberate rotations rather than jerky or bouncing movements
  • This exercise effectively targets the shoulder external and internal rotators
  • The rotational movement engages your core muscles significantly
  • Use moderate weight to maintain proper form and control
  • This exercise can improve shoulder stability and rotational strength

Recommended starting values
