Primary Muscles

A shoulder isolation exercise using a weight plate where the arms are abducted laterally to shoulder height, targeting the lateral deltoids.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and your core engaged.
  2. Hold a weight plate with both hands at waist height, arms at your sides with a slight bend in your elbows.
  3. Maintain a neutral spine and keep your shoulders relaxed.
  4. Inhale to prepare.
  5. Exhale and raise the plate laterally out to the sides, lifting it to shoulder height.
  6. Move the plate in a smooth, controlled arc from your sides to shoulder height.
  7. Pause briefly at the top of the movement, feeling the contraction in your shoulders.
  8. Inhale and lower the plate back down to waist height with control.
  9. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your elbows slightly bent throughout the movement; avoid locking them.
  • Avoid using momentum or swinging the plate; move with control throughout.
  • Keep your torso upright; avoid leaning to one side or tilting as you raise the plate.
  • Focus on lifting from your shoulders rather than using your arms to swing the weight.
  • This isolation exercise effectively targets the lateral deltoids for shoulder width.
  • Use a moderate weight that allows for controlled repetitions with good form.
  • Breathe steadily; exhale as you raise the plate and inhale as you lower.

Recommended starting values
