An isolation exercise using a sled machine to target anterior deltoids through a vertical pressing motion.

Instructions

  1. Load the sled machine with appropriate weight.
  2. Sit upright with your back firmly against the backrest, feet flat on the floor.
  3. Grasp the handles with a neutral grip, hands shoulder-width apart.
  4. Position the handles at shoulder height, just in front of your shoulders.
  5. Press the handles upward by extending your elbows and raising your arms overhead.
  6. Drive the handles straight up in a controlled motion until your arms are nearly fully extended.
  7. Pause briefly at the top of the movement.
  8. Slowly lower the handles back to shoulder height with control.
  9. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your back in contact with the pad throughout the movement; avoid leaning back excessively.
  • Use a controlled tempo; avoid bouncing the weight at the bottom position.
  • Full range of motion develops the shoulders through their complete range.
  • Select a weight that allows strict form throughout all repetitions.
  • Maintain steady breathing; exhale during the press, inhale during the lowering phase.
  • This movement effectively targets the anterior deltoids with minimal shoulder joint stress.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
