Side Laterals to Front RaiseSide Laterals to Front Raise

A multi-directional shoulder exercise combining lateral raises and front raises, targeting the anterior and lateral deltoids with dumbbell resistance.

Instructions

  1. Stand in an athletic position with feet hip-width apart and hold a pair of dumbbells at your sides.
  2. Keep your torso upright with shoulders back and core engaged.
  3. Raise the weights directly in front of you to shoulder height, keeping elbows slightly bent.
  4. Avoid swinging or cheating; maintain smooth, controlled movement throughout.
  5. At the top, move the weights laterally out to your sides while maintaining arm extension.
  6. Lower the weights with controlled motion back to the starting position at your sides.
  7. On your next repetition, raise the weights laterally out to your sides first to shoulder height.
  8. Then move the weights in front of you, keeping your arms extended.
  9. Lower the weights to the starting position with control.

Tips

  • Alternate between starting with front raises and lateral raises each repetition for variety.
  • Use lighter weight and focus on the range of motion and smooth transitions.
  • Keep your core and shoulders stable; avoid excessive torso movement.
  • Move slowly and deliberately, feeling the contraction in your shoulder muscles.
  • Breathe steadily throughout; exhale during the lifting phases and inhale during lowering.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
