A combined shoulder exercise using dumbbells that transitions from a lateral raise to a front raise in one continuous motion.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with a neutral grip.
  2. Keep a slight bend in your elbows and your core engaged throughout the movement.
  3. Raise the dumbbells to the sides until your arms reach shoulder height in a lateral raise position.
  4. From this position, continue raising the dumbbells forward and upward to approximately eye level in a front raise motion.
  5. Reverse the movement by lowering the dumbbells back to shoulder height in the lateral raise position.
  6. Lower the dumbbells back down to your sides to complete one repetition.
  7. Repeat for the target number of repetitions.

Tips

  • This exercise targets all three deltoid heads in one continuous movement.
  • Use lighter weight than you would for individual shoulder raises to maintain control throughout.
  • Move smoothly from the lateral raise position to the front raise position without pausing.
  • Maintain a slight bend in your elbows throughout the entire movement.
  • Breathe out during the upward phases and breathe in during the lowering phases.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
