A shoulder isolation exercise using a cable machine where you raise the arms at a 45-degree angle in the scapular plane to strengthen the rotator cuff and anterior deltoid.

Instructions

  1. Attach handles to low pulley cables on both sides of the machine and select appropriate weights.
  2. Stand in the center of the cable station with feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Grasp both handles and let your arms hang down at your sides with a slight bend at the elbows.
  4. Raise your arms up and out at approximately a 45-degree angle to your sides (between a front raise and lateral raise).
  5. Continue until your arms are at shoulder height with a slight forward angle.
  6. Lower the handles back to the starting position with control.

Tips

  • The scapular plane angle (45 degrees) is more natural for the shoulder joint than pure lateral raises.
  • Keep a slight bend in your elbows throughout the movement.
  • Lead with your elbows rather than your hands for proper shoulder mechanics.
  • Maintain upright posture and avoid leaning during the movement.
  • Use lighter weight to maintain proper form and protect the shoulder joints.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
