An isolation exercise performed on a machine that targets the lateral deltoid through abduction, building shoulder width and definition.

Instructions

  1. Sit at the lateral raise machine with your back firmly against the pad and feet on the floor.
  2. Position your upper arms perpendicular to your body with elbows slightly bent.
  3. Grasp the handles at approximately elbow height, keeping a neutral wrist position.
  4. Push the handles outward and upward in an arcing motion, raising your arms out to the sides.
  5. Continue raising until your arms are approximately level with your shoulders.
  6. Pause briefly at the top, feeling the lateral deltoid contract.
  7. Slowly lower the handles back to the starting position with control.
  8. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your back against the pad throughout the entire movement for stability.
  • Use lighter weight and focus on controlled movement rather than heavy loading.
  • Maintain a slight bend in your elbows; avoid fully straightening them during the lift.
  • Focus on the lateral shoulder muscles rather than using shoulder momentum.
  • Avoid using your legs or torso to drive the movement.
  • Lower the weight slowly to maintain constant tension on the shoulders.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
