Front Plate RaiseFront Plate Raise

An anterior deltoid isolation exercise using a weight plate held by the edges, raised from waist level to slightly above shoulder height with strict form.

Instructions

  1. Stand with your feet at shoulder-width apart, facing forward.
  2. Hold a barbell plate by gripping the edges (typically at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions).
  3. Keep your palms facing each other and hold the plate at waist level in front of your body.
  4. Maintain a slight bend in your elbows that will remain constant throughout the movement.
  5. Keep your core engaged and your torso completely stationary; do not swing or lean back.
  6. Raise the plate upward in front of your body until it reaches slightly above shoulder height.
  7. Pause briefly at the top and squeeze your anterior deltoids intensely.
  8. Lower the plate back down to the starting position in a controlled manner.

Tips

  • The plate should remain vertical throughout the movement; keep your grip even on both sides.
  • Strict form is essential; any momentum or swinging reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • Your torso should remain completely upright and stationary throughout the entire movement.
  • Avoid leaning backward; let your shoulders do the work, not your lower back.
  • The slight elbow bend maintained throughout reduces stress on the elbow joint.
  • This variation provides a unique mechanical advantage compared to dumbbell or barbell versions.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
