A shoulder isolation exercise using an EZ-bar to develop the anterior deltoids through a controlled frontal plane movement.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding an EZ-bar in front of your thighs with your arms fully extended.
  2. Use a neutral or slightly supinated grip (palms facing your thighs or slightly forward), with hands shoulder-width apart.
  3. Keep a slight bend in your elbows and your core tight.
  4. Raise the bar by flexing your shoulders, lifting it straight up in front of your body until the bar reaches approximately chest or eye level.
  5. Keep your elbows slightly bent throughout the movement; do not hyperextend them.
  6. Pause briefly at the top position, feeling your anterior deltoids contract.
  7. Lower the bar in a controlled manner back to your thighs, maintaining the same path and elbow angle.
  8. Repeat for your desired number of repetitions.

Tips

  • This is a pure isolation movement for the anterior deltoids; minimize body momentum or swinging.
  • Keep your core engaged and avoid excessive arching of the lower back.
  • The EZ-bar’s angled grip reduces wrist strain compared to a straight barbell and provides a more natural range of motion.
  • Use a controlled, steady tempo throughout; this is not an explosive movement.
  • Limit weight to what you can lift with strict form; front raises do not require heavy weight to be effective.
  • Pair this exercise with compound pressing movements for balanced shoulder development.
  • If you experience wrist discomfort, try using a wider grip or reducing the range of motion slightly.

Recommended starting values
