Shoulder isolation exercise performed with cable to target the anterior deltoids.

Instructions

  1. Attach handles to both sides of the cable machine at the low position, or use a single handle setup.
  2. Stand facing the cable with feet shoulder-width apart and grasp the handle(s) with your palms facing downward.
  3. Keep your arms straight with a slight bend in your elbows, hands at hip level.
  4. Raise the cable handle(s) in front of you to shoulder height in a controlled motion, keeping your arms nearly straight.
  5. Stop when the cables reach eye level or slightly above shoulder height.
  6. Squeeze your front shoulders at the peak of the movement.
  7. Lower the handle(s) back to the starting position with control.
  8. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your core engaged and avoid arching your lower back
  • Maintain a slight bend in your elbows throughout to protect the joints
  • Focus on using your anterior deltoids to lift, not momentum
  • Avoid swinging the weight or using your legs to generate power
  • Keep your chest up and shoulders packed (not shrugged) during the movement

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
