Lateral Raise (Band)
A shoulder isolation exercise using band resistance to target the lateral deltoids and upper traps.
Instructions
- Stand on the center of a resistance band with feet hip-width apart.
- Grasp both band ends with a neutral grip at your sides, hands facing inward.
- Keeping a slight bend in your elbows, raise your arms out to the sides until they reach shoulder height.
- Squeeze your shoulders and upper traps at the top position.
- Lower your arms with control back to the starting position.
- Maintain tension in the band throughout the entire range of motion.
Tips
- Keep your elbows slightly bent throughout; straight arms can place excessive strain on the shoulder joint.
- Avoid swinging or using momentum; perform the movement with controlled, deliberate motions.
- Keep your torso upright; avoid leaning backward to compensate for heavy resistance.
- If band tension lapses at the bottom, adjust your stance width or step further on the band.
- This exercise targets the often-neglected lateral shoulder muscles, improving shoulder width and definition.
- Perform 12-15 reps per set for optimal shoulder isolation and muscle development.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
