A dumbbell lateral raise performing partial range of motion to develop shoulder strength and isolation with controlled movement.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with your torso upright and a dumbbell in each hand being held at arm’s length.
  2. Keep your elbows close to your torso throughout the movement.
  3. Position your palms facing your torso with your feet about shoulder width apart.
  4. Keep your arms relatively straight with a slight bend at the elbow.
  5. Lift the weights out to your sides until they are about shoulder level height while exhaling.
  6. Feel the contraction for a second, squeezing your shoulders at the top.
  7. Begin to lower the weights back down to the starting position while inhaling.
  8. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your torso stationary; do not use momentum or swing.
  • Keep the palms facing down with the little finger slightly higher while lifting to focus on the shoulders.
  • Use controlled movements throughout the entire range of motion.
  • Avoid using heavy weights; lighter weights with proper form are most effective.
  • Maintain a slight bend in your elbows to reduce shoulder joint strain.
  • This is an excellent isolation exercise for building shoulder strength and size.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
