Front Dumbbell RaiseFront Dumbbell Raise

An isolation exercise for the anterior deltoid using dumbbells, where alternating arms are raised from the front of the thighs to shoulder height.

Instructions

  1. Stand with your feet at shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Let your arms hang straight down at your sides with your palms facing your thighs.
  3. Keep a slight bend in your elbows and your torso completely stationary throughout.
  4. Raise your left dumbbell upward in front of your body until it reaches shoulder height.
  5. Keep your palm facing downward as you perform the lift.
  6. Pause briefly at the top and squeeze your shoulder muscle.
  7. Lower the dumbbell back to the starting position while simultaneously raising your right dumbbell.
  8. Continue alternating arms in a smooth, controlled manner for the prescribed reps.

Tips

  • Keep your core engaged and your body stable throughout the movement.
  • The slight bend in your elbows reduces stress on the elbow joint.
  • Perform the movement slowly to maintain constant tension on the anterior deltoids.
  • Avoid using momentum or swinging the weight; this reduces muscle engagement.
  • You can perform this exercise with both arms simultaneously if preferred.
  • The dumbbell provides a greater range of motion compared to the barbell version.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
