An isolation exercise for the anterior deltoids performed by raising dumbbells from hip height to shoulder height in front of the body.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand with palms facing your thighs.
  2. Keep a slight bend in your elbows throughout the entire movement.
  3. Raise the dumbbells in front of your body in a controlled manner until your arms are parallel to the floor or slightly higher.
  4. Hold the top position briefly while maintaining control and avoiding momentum.
  5. Slowly lower the dumbbells back down to the starting position in a controlled manner.
  6. Repeat for the target number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Avoid swinging or using momentum to lift the weights—keep the movement slow and controlled.
  • Keep your core engaged and maintain an upright posture throughout.
  • Do not raise the dumbbells higher than eye level to avoid excessive strain on the shoulder joint.
  • Maintain a slight bend in your elbows to reduce stress on the elbow joint.
  • Breathe in as you lower the weights and exhale as you raise them.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
