Overhead Shoulder Press (Smith Machine)Overhead Shoulder Press (Smith Machine)

A pressing movement performed from a seated position on the Smith machine, where the barbell is pressed from shoulder height to overhead, primarily targeting the deltoids and triceps.

Instructions

  1. Position a bench underneath the Smith machine with the back support at approximately 80 degrees.
  2. Adjust the bar height so it aligns with approximately shoulder height when you’re seated.
  3. Load an appropriate weight and sit on the bench with your back firmly against the support.
  4. Your feet should be flat on the floor or a footrest for stability.
  5. Grip the bar with a pronated (palms forward) grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  6. Unlock the bar and hold it at shoulder height with your elbows slightly in front of the bar.
  7. Press the bar upward and slightly backward in a controlled manner until your arms are nearly fully extended overhead.
  8. Pause briefly at the top of the movement.
  9. Lower the bar slowly back to shoulder height with control.

Tips

  • Keep your back in contact with the bench throughout the movement for stability and proper form.
  • Position your head slightly forward as the bar passes to avoid bumping your head.
  • Maintain a neutral spine; do not arch excessively or round your back.
  • Keep your feet firmly planted to generate leg drive and stability.
  • The Smith machine path reduces stabilization demands compared to barbell pressing.
  • Control the eccentric (lowering) phase to maximize muscle engagement.
  • Do not lockout your elbows completely at the top to maintain continuous tension on the shoulders.
