Shoulder Press (Cable)Shoulder Press (Cable)

A compound shoulder exercise using cable machines where you press handles upward from shoulder height to build shoulder strength and power.

Instructions

  1. Move the cables to the bottom of the towers and select an appropriate weight.
  2. Stand directly in between the uprights. Grasp the cables and hold them at shoulder height, palms facing forward. This will be your starting position.
  3. Keeping your head and chest up, extend through the elbow to press the handles directly over head.
  4. After pausing at the top, return to the starting position and repeat.

Tips

  • Maintain an upright posture and engage your core throughout the movement
  • The cable provides constant tension unlike free weights which is beneficial for time under tension
  • Press the handles slightly forward to align with the scapular plane
  • Control the eccentric (lowering) portion to maximize muscle damage and growth
  • Avoid excessive arching of the lower back by maintaining core engagement

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
