Standing Dumbbell PressStanding Dumbbell Press

A fundamental compound overhead pressing exercise using dumbbells, building shoulder strength and stability while engaging the core for balance and control.

Instructions

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height. Your elbows should be at roughly 90 degrees, positioned out slightly from your body.
  2. Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine with your shoulders packed (slightly pulled back and down).
  3. Press the dumbbells directly upward in a controlled motion, extending through the elbows until your arms are nearly fully extended at the top.
  4. At the top position, the dumbbells should be slightly in front of your head (not directly over it), creating a strong line of force through your body.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, feeling the contraction in your shoulders.
  6. Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height with control, resisting gravity throughout the descent.
  7. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Avoid excessive arching of your lower back—maintain core tension to keep your spine neutral.
  • Keep your elbows relatively stable; avoid flaring them out to the sides excessively.
  • Use a controlled tempo rather than relying on momentum or jerking the weight.
  • The dumbbells should move vertically with minimal forward or backward travel.
  • For stability, ensure your feet are firmly planted and your core is engaged throughout.
  • This exercise demands more core stabilization than a barbell version, making it excellent for functional strength.

Recommended starting values
