A unilateral shoulder press machine that allows independent arm movement for each side. Excellent for developing balanced shoulder strength and addressing asymmetries.

Instructions

  1. Sit in the machine with your back firmly against the backrest.
  2. Adjust the seat height so the handles are at approximately shoulder height.
  3. Grip the handles with both hands, palms facing forward.
  4. Position your feet flat on the floor for stability and support.
  5. Engage your core and maintain an upright posture throughout the movement.
  6. Press the handles forward and upward in a controlled manner.
  7. Achieve full elbow extension while maintaining stability through your core and back.
  8. Return the handles to shoulder height with controlled movement.

Tips

  • The iso-lateral design allows each arm to move independently, addressing strength imbalances.
  • Maintain contact with the backrest throughout the movement for proper form.
  • Press through the full range of motion without locking out your elbows at the top.
  • The guided machine path reduces stability demands compared to free weight pressing.
  • Perform equal reps on each side to develop balanced shoulder strength.
  • Use moderate weight with higher reps (10-15) to build muscular endurance.
  • Keep your head against the backrest to prevent forward head posture.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
