Standing Military Press

A fundamental compound overhead pressing exercise using a barbell, building shoulders strength, stability, and core engagement while standing.
Instructions
- Begin by placing a barbell on a squat rack at approximately chest height. Select your desired weight and prepare to lift.
- Grip the barbell with a pronated grip (palms facing forward), with your hands positioned slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
- Slightly bend your knees and position the barbell on your collar bone, resting on your chest just below your neck.
- Lift the barbell off the rack and take a step back, positioning your feet approximately shoulder-width apart for a stable base.
- Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine. Your shoulders should be packed (slightly retracted) for stability and shoulder health.
- Press the barbell upward by extending through your shoulders and elbows, driving the weight directly overhead.
- Continue pressing until your arms are nearly fully extended, with the bar positioned slightly in front of your head at the top.
- Pause briefly at the top position, feeling the shoulder contraction.
- Lower the barbell back down to your collar bone in a controlled manner, resisting gravity throughout the descent.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Keep your elbows slightly bent at the top to reduce stress on your shoulder joints—avoid complete lockout.
- Maintain core tension throughout to prevent excessive lower back arching and provide stability.
- The barbell should travel in a mostly vertical plane with minimal forward or backward deviation.
- Control the descent just as much as the ascent for optimal strength and muscle development.
- This exercise demands significant core stabilization, making it an excellent functional strength exercise.
- Use a controlled tempo and avoid using momentum or jerking the weight from your chest.
- Proper form is more important than heavy weight; start light to establish good movement patterns.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
