Instructions

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a kettlebell at shoulder height with your forearm vertical and the kettlebell resting on your wrist and forearm (the rack position).
  2. Brace your core and glutes for stability.
  3. Press the kettlebell directly overhead by extending through your elbow and shoulder, ending with the kettlebell above your head with your arm fully extended.
  4. Keep your gaze forward and avoid excessive arching of your lower back.
  5. Lower the kettlebell back to the rack position under control.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch arms if performing single-arm presses.

Tips

  • Maintain a tight core and stable stance throughout the movement.
  • Press in a straight vertical line, not forward or backward.
  • Keep your shoulder blade packed and engaged to protect your shoulder joint.
  • Breathe out as you press, breathe in as you lower.
  • For single-arm presses, the non-pressing arm can hang at your side or be used for balance.
  • Ensure the kettlebell stays in the rack position (not on top of your wrist or hand) during the movement.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
