A standing overhead pressing movement using the smith machine that develops shoulder and tricep strength while the fixed bar path provides stability for beginners.

Instructions

  1. Set the bar to approximately upper chest/shoulder height on the smith machine.
  2. Position yourself facing the bar with feet hip-to-shoulder width apart. Stand upright and position the bar across your upper chest and shoulders.
  3. Grasp the bar with a shoulder-width pronated grip (palms facing away from you).
  4. Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine. This is your starting position.
  5. Press the bar vertically upward by extending your arms, exhaling as you press the weight overhead.
  6. Continue pressing until your arms are nearly fully extended but with a slight bend in your elbows.
  7. Lower the bar back to the starting position under control, inhaling as you lower the weight.
  8. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Tips

  • The fixed vertical bar path of the smith machine makes this movement stable and safe, ideal for beginners or those working with heavier weight.
  • Keep your core tight throughout the movement to prevent excessive lower back extension.
  • Avoid extending your lower back as you press; maintain an upright torso position.
  • The standing variation engages more core muscles than the seated version due to the stability demands.
  • Lower the bar until it just touches your upper chest to maintain constant tension on the shoulders.
  • Don’t lock out your elbows at the top; maintain a slight bend for continuous muscle engagement.

Recommended starting values
