An advanced kettlebell exercise combining a clean with an overhead jerk. Develops explosive pressing power and total-body coordination through rapid movement.
Instructions
- Hold a kettlebell by the handle in each hand at your sides.
- Explosively clean both kettlebells to your shoulders by extending through your legs and hips while pulling the kettlebells toward your shoulders.
- Rotate your wrists so your palms face forward and the kettlebells are racked at shoulder height.
- Keep your elbows pointing downward and slightly forward.
- Dip your body by bending your knees slightly while maintaining an upright torso.
- Immediately reverse direction, driving through your heels and extending your hips and legs.
- Use the momentum generated from the dip to press the kettlebells overhead.
- Extend your arms fully, pressing the kettlebells directly overhead in a powerful movement.
- Return your feet to the ground, landing with one foot forward and one foot back (split stance).
- While maintaining the weights overhead, return to a standing position by bringing your feet together.
- Lower the kettlebells back to shoulder height or allow them to drop back to your sides.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- The jerk is an advanced, explosive movement; ensure solid fundamentals in cleans and presses before attempting.
- The speed of the dip and drive is critical for generating momentum to press heavier weight overhead.
- Use the split stance foot position to stabilize yourself under the weight overhead.
- Keep your core engaged throughout the movement to protect your lower back.
- This movement is excellent for building explosive pressing power and strength.
- Practice with lighter weight to master the movement pattern and timing before progressing to heavier loads.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
