Standing Alternating Dumbbell PressStanding Alternating Dumbbell Press

A standing shoulder exercise where you press dumbbells overhead alternately, engaging stabilizer muscles and building unilateral strength.

Instructions

  1. Stand with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Position your palms facing forward with your elbows pointed out at approximately 45 degrees.
  3. Keep your core engaged and maintain an upright posture.
  4. Press one dumbbell straight overhead by fully extending your arm.
  5. Keep your opposite arm stationary at shoulder height throughout.
  6. Lower the first dumbbell back to shoulder height in a controlled manner.
  7. Immediately press the opposite dumbbell overhead.
  8. Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Avoid excessive arching of your lower back; keep your core tight throughout.
  • The alternating pattern requires greater core stability to prevent rotation.
  • Move deliberately and avoid jerking the weight; maintain strict form.
  • This unilateral variation helps identify and correct strength imbalances.
  • For increased difficulty, increase weight or perform on an unstable surface.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
